No parent would want to see their child pass away. Most would prefer their children to outlive them. But there are so many cases where this does not happen. In the case of six-year-old Elena Desserich, her childhood was cut short due to a rare illness.
The little girl was just like any little girl her age. She loved to draw and read, plus Elena dreamt of being a mom and a teacher! She was a girl full of dreams and we think that this little girl was going to get there.
But life doesn’t always cooperate. Elena’s doctor had bad news to tell her family. The 6-year-old girl was suffering from a rare form of brain cancer. Keith and Brooke, Elena’s parents, found out that surgery couldn’t be done and their daughter has less than a year to live.
The parents decided not to tell Elena about this. Keith and Brooke wanted their little girl to enjoy the days that were given to her. As a family who loves her, they made each day so special for Elena. They also prepared a diary full of entries about her so that her little sister, Gracie, would remember her.
But even though she was surrounded with love, Elena succumbed to the disease. She passed away last August 2007.
Though we know the parents prepared for her last days, we were surprised to realize that Elena did have a surprise for them.
A few days after she died, her family found some of her letters dedicated to them. The young girl wanted her loved ones to know that she loved them and that she was happy that she got to spend time with them. Keith and Brooke thought it was a one-time thing but to their surprise, letters started appearing everywhere!
Notes with “I love you” and drawn hearts were in socks, drawers, inside the pages of random books. Elena decided to part with them in the sweetest, most surprising way possible.
Each parent keeps an unopened letter with them. It’s their way to keep what Elena did alive and a way to save the last note from their beloved girl.
What do you think about what Elena did? Did you think that she was aware of her last days on Earth that’s why she wrote these letters? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
