Days after Eat Bulaga host Joey de Leon drew flak over his controversial statement on depression, the comedian is currently on a self-imposed suspension from the longest running noontime show in the Philippines.
Although the network management didn’t reportedly suspend the comedian over his remarks, Joey will still be absent from the show beginning this week.
On his Instagram account, Joey continued to acknowledge his mistake over what he knew about mental illnesses. Along with a photo of him inside iCremeria, he captioned it with: “I made a mistake and I’m suspending myself… An ounce of suspension is worth a pound of tour!” Ngek!”
Despite the playful tone of his caption, people aren’t quite sure if the funny man is serious or joking. Remember that Joey often makes sarcastic remarks that put him in hot water.
According to PEP, iCremeria is a famous dessert place in Hong Kong.
It could also be that Joey is observing his birthday earlier than usual.
On Saturday, October 14, his Eat Bulaga family will celebrate his 71st birthday on the show. In fact, netizens began to send their wishes for the TV host, including one from his godson, dancer-actor Joshua Zamora.
Joey’s son, Jocas, didn’t pass up the chance to take a shot at his father’s detractors:
Last Thursday, October 5, the comedian dismissed a Juan for All, All for Juan contestant’s concern about her mother who has depression. During the show, he said, “Yung depression gawa-gawa lang ng mga tao ‘yan. Gawa nila sa sarili nila.”
His co-host Maine “Yaya Dub” Mendoza, other half of the AlDub loveteam, called him out for his remark, saying that mental health is a serious matter.
But Joey still continued to tease Maine about the ‘made-up’ illness, quipping that depression is only for the rich while for the poor, it’s another way of saying that they lost hope.
Following backlash from viewers and netizens, Joey apologized on-air last Friday, October 6. His family clarified the gravity of mental illness and thousands of lives lost over undiagnosed conditions.
“Nagkamali po ako. Hindi ko alam na ganun kalawak at kalalim pala ‘yun. Akala ko stress ‘yun. So uli, humihingi po ako ng kapatawaran sa mga nasaktan, nagalit,” he said.
